Sybase stores values up to 254 characters as short strings

Sybase’s Adaptive Server Anywhere treats CHAR, VARCHAR, and LONG VARCHAR columns all as the same type. Values up to and including 254 characters are stored as short strings, with a preceding length byte. Values of 255 bytes and longer are considered long strings.
